Exploring Whistler, Canada: A Guide by Free skiing Icon Mike Douglas

Whistler, British Columbia, is a snow lover’s dream destination nestled in the majestic Coast Mountains. Home to Whistler Blackcomb, the largest ski resort in North America, this destination offers more than 8,000 acres of varied terrain. Free skiing legend Mike Douglas, a long-time Whistler resident, shares his favourite spots and tips for making the most of this iconic destination.

Mike Douglas: Whistler’s Free skiing Pioneer

Whistler has had Mike Douglas, the “godfather of free skiing,” on its list of influencers. Douglas has been influential in innovation in skiing by co-inventing twin-tip skis and producing films about skiing. He was attracted to Whistler when he was 18 due to the lively ski culture it hosted. He has seen this town evolve into a world-class destination.

Douglas loves the community feeling and sustainability pursuit of Whistler. Protect Our Winters Canada is an environmental advocacy group, which does not forget that snow sports happen within climate change.

Douglas’s Whistler Favorite’s

  • Rocket Coffee Co

Start your day with a caffeine kick at Rocket Coffee Co, just a stone’s throw from Creekside Gondola. According to Douglas, the retro-tinted coffee shop and snug lodgings are the locals’ favourites. He adds that its coffee is of good quality and eclectically decorated, so it’s one of his top places to go before heading up to the ski runs.

  • Peak to Creek Run

For the most epic ski adventure, take on Peak to Creek, one of North America’s longest continuous ski runs. It is an exhilarating test with seven miles and 1,529 meters of descending. The run culminates at Dusti’s Bar & BBQ, where you can savory hearty fare such as pulled-pork sandwiches.

  • Valles Lumina

See the magic of Whistler by dark in the Valles Lumina Night Walk, an experience of a mystical forest adventure using holograms, music, and storytelling. It is an activity that will continue to be captivating to people of all ages, according to Douglas.

  • Sushi Village

Sushi Village offers a fusion of Japanese-Hawaiian dishes and an energized atmosphere. One of Doug’s favourites, it’s legendary for its ahi poke, as well as its tangy Age dashi tofu. There’s also the “Wall of Fame” chronicling its history and famous friends.

  • Squamish Lulwa Cultural Centre

Visit the culture of Whistler at this heritage center moving the cultures forward of Squamish and Lulwa First Nations. In his book, Douglas says, “One place in this region to be sure to stop for and learn about.”

  • Scandinavia Spa

Ski all day and warm up afterward in thermal baths and saunas set within forest surroundings in this luxurious Scandinavia Spa.

Whistler does combine adventure, history, and community; rich experiences are guaranteed, since besides the wondrous skiing offered there, other reasons provide another dimension to the holiday there.
